Mary Ann Merritt, daughter of Solomon and Mary Merritt (1831) Old Burying Ground at Byram Shore

This cemetery is located at the corner of Byram Shore Road and Byram Dock Street with pleasant views of Long Island Sound nearby. It comprises a triangular plot of land about one acre in size, with a small rectangular section separated for the entombment of members of one branch of the Lyon Family. In addition, an area behind the main section of the cemetery closest to the shore is shown on town maps as a "Colored Cemetery" where slaves of the early Byram families are buried in unmarked graves.

Family names inscribed on the tombstones include Banks, Sherwood, Lyon, Merritt, Peck and others. Thomas Lyon, Sr., whose circa 1670 homestead stands at the entrance to Greenwich on West Putnam Avenue from New York State, is said to be buried here in 1690, making this one of the oldest burying grounds in Greenwich.

Mary Ann Merritt, daughter of Solomon and Mary Merritt
died July 26, 1831, aged 22 years, 3 months and 29 days.
She is lost! the rose that was with us
tis but transplanted to her native sky
When thou shalt mingle with parted clay

And thy freed spirit seek the realms of day.
